Directions for use

How to navigate in the MetaMap

Following are instructions for use of the MetaMap. The map was made using SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), a recommendation of the W3C for vector graphics. To learn about SVG, installing the SVG Viewer plugin, and its features, just click here to consult our guide.

Legend

The legend in the upper left corner of the map identifies the name and the colour of each of the MetaMap's lines. Each line contains the metadata standards, sets, and initiatives (MSSIs) for its theme. The themes are grouped as follows:
  • Information processes:
    • Creation
    • Organisation
    • Dissemination
    • Preservation

  • Institutions with expertise in information management
    • Libraries
    • Archives
    • Museums

  • Types of information files
    • Text
    • Still images
    • Moving images
    • Sound

Position the mouse over a line in the legend to see the line highlighted on the map. Click on the line to bring up a window containing the explanations for all the MSSIs grouped on that line.

MSSIs

Most of the MSSIs are represented by acronyms. Position the mouse over an acronym to see what it stands for in a popup window.

Click on the MSSI to see the explanation for it. For each MSSI there is a brief definition, a link to its official site if there is one, and sometimes links to other sites of interest.

The explanations for the MSSIs for each theme appear together on a single page.

MSSI index

The MSSI index lets you find a particular acronym. In the acronym index, click on the tab containing the first letter of the acronym to get a list of acronyms which begin with that letter. When you click on the desired acronym in the list, the MetaMap zooms in to place the acronym in the centre of the window. Click on the "Zoom out" button to zoom back to the original display, or choose another acronym from the list to locate it on the map.
